Safer bug spray?

I have been on a hunt to find a safe and effective bug spray and it seems that the general consensus is that making your own from various essential oils is the way to go. I believe in essential oils and use some, but to be honest, they kind of scare me. There is so much to learn and I’m nervous to get it wrong because I know that some oils (and some concentrations) can be dangerous to kids and pregnant women.

In this case I don’t know how much to dilute it when using it on my kids and I don’t know how to mix the various oils in order to make the spray effective to ward off all different types of bugs. Furthermore, I read that lemon eucalyptus oil, which has recently been proven to be just as effective as DEET (but obviously safer!), should not be used on children younger than 3 years old at all. Too much to think about! I am more of a buyer than a DIYer anyway. I just don’t know which to buy!

I found a couple articles worth sharing. This one by non-toxic munchkin lists a bunch of sprays you can buy online. I plan to order one of the three sprays in the picture attached to this post soon, but first I wanted to ask you what you use.

Does anyone have a recommendation for which to buy or a very exact and foolproof recipe for a DIY essential oils mix?

Side note: I also found this article about insect repelling perennial plants. Definitely going to give some of these a whirl! Why not?!

Thanks in advance for your recommendation.
