Leonardo DiCaprio – Environmentalist and hopefully soon to be Oscar winner!

Anyone think Leonardo DiCaprio is going to win tonight? Did you know he is an environmentalist and philanthropist who recently donated $15 million to environmental projects? He also met with the Pope to discuss the environment. Pretty amazing.

Leo himself along with Al Gore announced that the Oscars was going green back in 2007. This article lists the ways they went about it and the the impact it made.

Fun fact: The article mentions the documentary An Inconvenient Truth, which Beautycounter’s CEO, Gregg Renfrew, credits with being her “tipping point”. It motivated her to begin a quest to living healthier and safer. That journey eventually led her to create the Beautycounter brand and dedicate her life to lobbying for consumer protection in the personal care industry.

Enjoy the Oscars!

Product Spotlight: Nourishing Cleansing Balm

PRODUCT SHOUT OUT:

NOURISHING CLEANSING BALM

Ever since becoming a consultant for Beautycounter I have been trying to use all of the products so that I can share my experiences with my clients (and also because I am obsessed with this stuff!) Since there are too many products to use at once I switch off regularly. That being said…MY NOURISHING CLEANSING BALM IS NEVER GETTING SWAPPED OUT…EVER!!!

I am obsessed with this multi-purpose product! It is a cleanser/moisturizer/mask for nighttime and it makes my skin feel like velvet after I use it. It also helps my son when his eczema flares up and I hear it helps soothe rosacea sufferers as well. I am happy to send out samples. Let me know if you’re interested.

Happy Saturday!

A Wake Up Story

Healthy Child Healthy World, a nonprofit organization and trusted non-profit partner of Beautycounter, created this video titled “A Wake Up Story“. I find it to be one of the most revealing and motivating pieces that I have ever seen. I absolutely love it. It is stirring and thought provoking and makes me proud to be part of this movement to healthier, cleaner living.

I am inspired by the idea that all we need to do is make small changes in our own lives to make progress attainable on a grand scale. We can all play a part and it starts with corporate and government accountability as well as consumer awareness. Making the choice to support and get involved with companies and organizations like Beautycounter that are helping to transform the marketplace is easy to do and very powerful.

Please take a few minutes to view this award-winning video.

HOW OUR MOVEMENT FOR BETTER BEAUTY GIVES BACK

From day one, Beautycounter decided that giving back was core to who we are. That is part of the reason we partner with our three Trusted Non-Profit partners: We support the work they do to educate and activate the public around protecting our health from harmful ingredients and chemicals.

Give Back

Beautycounter generously donates to our Trusted Non-Profit partners and other allied organizations who share in our mission to get safer products into the hands of everyone.

Multi-Purpose Beauty

Multi-Purpose Beauty

As many of you can attest, Beautycounter’s products are both high-performing and safe, but did you also know that many of them can pull double duty? Below I have listed a handful of products and the many different ways you can utilize them in addition to what they were originally created for. I compiled this list with the help of many of my amazing counterparts at Beautycounter and I would like to thank them for all of their help and wisdom. I would also love to hear from you if you have anything to add, so please feel free to comment and share.

Calendula Lip Balm: Before I tell you the bonus uses for this amazing lip balm I have to tell you how much I LOVE this stuff for its traditional use. I slathered it on all winter and haven’t had chapped lips once! It is smooth and long-lasting and has a subtle yet sweet scent that I love. My lips have never been softer.

Nipple Cream and Thumb Sucking Cream

Okay, time for the good stuff. I am here to say stop letting your lips enjoy all the glorious effects of this balm alone and consider using it as nipple butter! Yup — that is correct — nipple cream! It is 100% safe, made with soothing and smoothing avocado oil, shea butter, meadow foam seed oil and jojoba oil. Of course, it also contains calendula, which acts as an anti-inflammatory for those beginning weeks when your nipples need all the help they can get! Am I right, mamas?!

In addition to that, the lip balm can be used to sooth a baby’s raw thumb after hours of sucking. Believe it or not, the leading creams that were in fact created for this use often contain extremely dangerous ingredients and should not be consumed by humans, especially babies – seems crazy, but it’s true. The calendula lip balm is safe and helps to heal, which is amazing.

Mosquito Bites

Another way to utilize this awesome product is to use it on mosquito bites. I know, unexpected! Can’t hurt to try, right?

Minimizes Burns

One of my fellow Beautycounter consultants burned her hand while cooking dinner and used the calendula lip balm in place of the regular (chemical laden) cream she would have used in the past. It worked like a charm and she had almost no sign of a burn the next day. Good to know!

Lip Conditioning Peppermint Balm: This balm is similar to the calendula balm, however it replaces calendula with peppermint and rosemary leaf oils to cool and soothe.  It provides a slight tingle on your lips, which I love.

Vaporub

In addition to soothing and protecting your lips, this yummy peppermint balm can be used as an alternative to vaporub. So, next time you or your loved ones are congested just try putting a little under your nose and breathe in deep. The peppermint oils help to open your passageways and as opposed to the typical vaporubs on the market, this one is actually safe to use — on anyone — even babies!

Lustro Body Oil: This oil is FABULOUS. Made of a blend of 13 botanical oils it instantly absorbs and intensely moisturizes leaving the skin smooth, silky and luminous. I use this in conjunction with either the Hydrate Body Lotion or the Enrich Body Butter and it eliminates my son’s eczema.

Sooth Fly Away Hair

As if that isn’t enough, it can also be used to help smooth those pesky fly away hairs. Rub a very small amount in your hands and apply it to the tips of your hair. Do not apply to the scalp in order to avoid an oily look.

Prevent and Soothe Sunburn

To top that, these amazing oils are so deep conditioning that they can even help to soothe sunburned and peeling skin. If used immediately after exposure to the sun it can help you avoid peeling altogether.

Rosewater Uplifting Spray: Our rosewater spray was created to be a skin-softening toning spray made with organic rose essence, purified water and moisturizing sodium hyaluronate. I am told that many people like to put this in the fridge and use it as a pick-me-up on hot days. Worth a try!

Set or Remove Makeup

This spray is often used after makeup application to help it “set”. Conversely, if you spray it in a q-tip you can use it to remove any eye makeup remnants when you wake up in the morning. Let me tell you, in the morning I can use all the help I can get. J

Nourishing Cleansing Balm: This best-seller is already multi-functional and worthy of a major shout out. I truly love it. It melts into your skin to hydrate while it cleanses, removing makeup and other impurities, without stripping away moisture. With vitamin C to brighten the skin and raspberry and cranberry seed oils to hydrate, the formula can also be used as an intensely nourishing face mask. I also use this for my son’s eczema flare ups and it works wonders.

Foot Callus Treatment

Another awesome way to use this product is as a callus treatment. It is very effective on dry, cracked, sandal foot, which plagues me in the summer.

Makeup Highlighter

While the foot callus treatment option is not too far of a stretch, this next one is! This amazing, multi-purpose balm can also be used as a face/cheek highlighter when applying makeup. Who doesn’t need some extra shine and glow?

Cuticle Softener

The balm can also be used to help soothe and manage your cuticles. A lot has been uncovered in the news recently about the extremely dangerous chemical ingredients found in products used during manicures. This is a safe alternative that truly helps to soften cuticles. At least one part of the manicure can be safe now.

Kidscounter Nice Do Shampoo: This extremely gentle gluten and nut-free kids shampoo contains a mix of broccoli seed, carrot root and strawberry extracts that leave hair shiny and soft. There is also a hint of citrus oil and vanilla extract which gives the shampoo a creamy orange-vanilla swirl scent.

Bubble Bath

As much as the kids will love the shampoo I can bet they will love it even more when it turns their regular bath into a super fun and fantastic smelling bubble bath.

Touchup Skin Concealer Pen: Already a dual purpose product, our concealer pen hides dark circles, redness, and other imperfections while also helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines and photoaging, so skin looks firmer, brighter and instantly more even.

Eye Makeup Primer

In addition to hiding the fact that I am a very tired mommy, I use the leftover concealer from  under my eyes and apply some to the lids as well to act as an eye shadow primer. My eye shadow and eyeliner stay on way longer when I do this and it helps me apply the makeup more smoothly and evenly.

Thanks for reading and thank you to all the Beautycounter consultants who sent me their experiences and helped make this fabulous list of multi-tasking products!

J&J ordered to pay $72 million + Fox New’s list of the 5 most toxic chemicals in baby care products

Fox News just released a list of the five most toxic chemicals found in baby care products. SCARY! Of course, all five are on Beautycounter’s Never List (see image) and are not found in any of our products.

In related news, Johnson & Johnson was just court ordered to pay $72 million in damages for cancer death linked to talcum powder. They face additional claims that it, in an effort to boost sales, failed for decades to warn consumers that its talc-based products could cause cancer. About 1,000 cases have been filed in Missouri state court, and another 200 in New Jersey.
It is truly up to YOU, the consumer, to read ingredients and take your health and safety into your own hands. Unfortunately, we cannot blindly trust these corporations, or even our government, to protect us and the sooner we learn this the better. Babies and kids are especially at risk of having these toxic chemicals adversely affect their little, growing bodies.

I could not be more excited for the Beautycounter baby line launch next week 🙂

Truvia and Stevia – not as good as you once thought

I am SO sad to hear that my beloved Truvia isnt safe and that stevia products in general have been corrupted by corporate America (like everything else) and are not safe as we had once thought. I used to carry around a small pouch in my bag with Truvia to use when I went out for coffee. Now I am trying to use cream to add sweetness (and better for you fat) rather than sugar or stevia products. I am not going to be growing my own stevia, so this is the best I can do. I will try the Sweet Leaf & Trader Joe’s versions that the Food Babe says are okay. I will let you know how that goes. Has anyone ever tried those?

My quest to getting healthy

Ok! It’s happening! My husband, mom and good friend are all joining me on a quest to get healthy. We are going to eat healthy foods (no more bagels for breakfast) and try to be as active as possible. I started today by walking 2 miles while pushing a double stroller. I did not anticipate the icebergs of snow still lingering, seemingly always in the way of my sidewalk path. It’s okay though, my boys thought it was hilarious.

I think I will try to start juicing for breakfast now. I only have a blender and I have no idea what to make. I will be on Pinterest later, but if any of you care to share your favorite recipes I would be most appreciative! Keep in mind I like it to not taste like veggies lol

This chart I found on Pinterest is helpful too:
